A guide to the competitions our students participate in throughout the year — what to expect, when they are, and who can compete.
1.1CAML
The California Association of Mathematics Leagues — 6 contests held throughout the school year. A great way to build contest experience alongside peers from other schools.
1.2AMC 8
A 25-question, 40-minute competition for students in grade 8 or below. A great entry point into competitive math covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and logical reasoning.
1.3AMC 10
A 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice exam for students in grade 10 or below who are under 17.5 years old. Covers algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. Offered in two sittings (10A and 10B) — students may take both. Top scorers qualify for the AIME, and as of the 2026-2027 cycle, AMC scores are no longer a factor in USA(J)MO qualification — only AIME scores are.
1.4AIME
The American Invitational Mathematics Examination — a 15-question, 3-hour proof-free exam open only to top scorers on the AMC 10 or AMC 12. Starting with the 2027 exam, AIME is administered at official Pearson testing centers rather than in school. Students who perform well on the AIME may qualify for the USA(J)MO.
1.5Mathcounts Chapter
The regional qualifying round of Mathcounts. Features Sprint, Target, and Team rounds. Top performers advance to the state competition.
1.6Mathcounts State
The state-level Mathcounts competition for top scorers from chapter. The most prestigious event on our calendar — students who advance represent our region and compete for a spot at nationals.
